How to Pack a Bear Can 1

August 19, 2014

I just picked up my permit and will start backpacking The Circle of Solitude tomorrow. Inside my bear canister I have packed 8 days worth of food, which is no small feat.  And no, I didn’t use my feet to stuff the can! I did however take the big bear can and not the baby one.  The trick to packing a bear can is to pack it tight! I do this by first putting a base layer of a few dinners and breakfasts on the bottom of the can.  Then I stuff small items like power bars and coffee packets along the sides of the can, this pushes the bigger items into the center  and eliminates gaps. Packing a bear canister is an art form. An empty bear can weighs 2 pounds  9 oz! This one full of food weighs just over 12 pounds. Kinda funny to think I will eat 12 pounds of food in 8 days.

To get an idea of the size of the bear can here it is next to a coffee cup.
